The Hong Kong Brain Bee Competition

What is it?

This competition, organized by the Hong Kong Brain Foundation, can foster neuroscience knowledge in the youth and encourage them to pursue a career pathway benefiting mankind – neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroscientists and alike. It is in line with the STEM education.  The Champion of the HK Brain Bee may be recommended to represent Hong Kong in the International Brain Bee Competition (IBB) https://www.thebrainbee.org/.  Certificates and awards will be presented to individual participants of the HK Brain Bee as well as the Champion school. The competition comprises the Written Quiz, Final Contest and the Meeting with Professors.

How to join?

Each registered secondary school in Hong Kong, local and international schools included, can nominate up to 20 students, aged 14 – 18 (Form 3 or higher) to participate.  The list can be found at the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government website: https://www.edb.gov.hk/

Invitation emails will be sent to schools for nomination of their students for registration. Interested biology or science teachers can also email us at hkbrainbee@gmail.com for the nomination form. If interested students wish to join, they can ask their teachers to do so. The completed nomination form should be returned to the Secretariat before the deadline. Further details about the competition will be sent to the student participants and the coordinating teacher by email. The call for registration will begin right after the Prize Presentation Ceremony for the previous year competition. After we have an estimation of the total number of participants, we will confirm the date and venue of the Written Quiz. 

How to win?

The Written Quiz will be in the format of multiple choice questions. The top distinction students will be the Finalists and they are eligible to join the Meeting with Professors tutorials and laboratory visits as well as the Final Contest. The Final Contest will be conducted in English in viva format with the questions prepared on 4 sections: Neuro-Anatomy, Neuro-Histology, Clinical Neuro I,  & Clinical Neuro II. The format will be similar to IBB as much as possible. The Champion will be the student with the highest marks. The Champion school will be the school with the highest cumulative scores from her students according to the following:

  • 1 score for participation (so as to encourage more students participation)
  • 2 scores for “good” result (>50 percentile)
  • 3 scores for “credit” result (>75 percentile)
  • 4 scores for “distinction” result (>90 percentile)
